A Dual Digital Signal Processor VME Board For Instrumentation And Control Applications

A Dual Digital Signal Processing VME Board was developed for the Continuous Electron Beam Accelerator Facility (CEBAF) Beam Current Monitor (BCM) system at Jefferson Lab. It is a versatile general-purpose digital signal processing board using an open architecture, which allows for adaptation to various applications. The base design uses two independent Texas Instrument (TI) TMS320C6711, which are 900 MFLOPS floating-point digital signal processors (DSP). Applications that require a fixed point DSP can be implemented by replacing the baseline DSP with the pin-for-pin compatible TMS320C6211. The design can be manufactured with a reduced chip set without redesigning the printed circuit board. For example it can be implemented as a single-channel DSP with no analog I/O.Comment: 3 PDF page

Youth transitions: mobility and the travel intentions of 12–20 year olds, Reading, UK

    Get PDF
Whilst Western societies may have reached ‘peak car’, young people are arguably the most significant group whose levels of car ownership, use and driving licence acquisition have declined. Against this backdrop, the paper discusses qualitative research conducted in Reading, UK considering young people’s (aged 12-20) views about bus travel. Whilst current pricing structures (both in Reading and across the UK) often offer under 18s discounted travel, the paper explores young people’s intentions about future travel as young adults. Drawing upon theorisations around youth transitions, we discuss how young people expect their mobility patterns to change as young adults in complex, shifting, fluid ways, and to involve multi-modal travel. Young people construct complex choice-biographies through which they plan pathways to navigate these mobility transitions. Although a small-scale study, this paper also offers some insights into the challenges, complexities and limitations of researching mobility intention

    Homological algebra for osp(1/2n)

We discuss several topics of homological algebra for the Lie superalgebra osp(1|2n). First we focus on Bott-Kostant cohomology, which yields classical results although the cohomology is not given by the kernel of the Kostant quabla operator. Based on this cohomology we can derive strong Bernstein-Gelfand-Gelfand resolutions for finite dimensional osp(1|2n)-modules. Then we state the Bott-Borel-Weil theorem which follows immediately from the Bott-Kostant cohomology by using the Peter-Weyl theorem for osp(1|2n). Finally we calculate the projective dimension of irreducible and Verma modules in the category O

Spatial Structure of Ion Beams in an Expanding Plasma

We report spatially resolved perpendicular and parallel, to the magnetic field, ion velocity distribution function (IVDF) measurements in an expanding argon helicon plasma. The parallel IVDFs, obtained through laser induced fluorescence (LIF), show an ion beam with v ≈ 8000 m/s flowing downstream and confined to the center of the discharge. The ion beam is measurable for tens of centimeters along the expansion axis before the LIF signal fades, likely a result of metastable quenching of the beam ions. The parallel ion beam velocity slows in agreement with expectations for the measured parallel electric field. The perpendicular IVDFs show an ion population with a radially outward flow that increases with distance from the plasma axis. Structures aligned to the expanding magnetic field appear in the DC electric field, the electron temperature, and the plasma density in the plasma plume. These measurements demonstrate that at least two-dimensional and perhaps fully three-dimensional models are needed to accurately describe the spontaneous acceleration of ion beams in expanding plasmas

A New Method for Grain Texture Manipulation in Post-Deposition Niobium Films

    Get PDF
Niobium films are frequently grown using forms of energetic condensation, with modest substrate temperatures to control grain structure. As an alternative, energetic deposition onto a cold substrate results in a dense amorphous film, with a much larger energy density than the re-crystallized state. Re-crystallization is then performed using a pulsed UV (HIPPO) laser, with minimal damage to the substrate. In addition, a graded interface between the substrate and Nb film is created during the early stages of energetic deposition. Experimental approach and apparatus are described

Workplace policies and practices promoting physical activity across England: what is commonly used and what works?

    Get PDF
Purpose Many adults fail to achieve sufficient moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA). Understanding how workplaces most effectively promote physical activity can benefit public health. Design/methodology/approach Data were collected via two online surveys. Firstly, 3,360 adults employed at 308 workplaces across England self-reported their MVPA, activity status at work and frequency of journeys made through active commuting. From this sample, 588 participants reported on the policies and practices used in their workplace to promote physical activity. Factor and cluster analysis identified common practice. Regression models examined the association between the workplace factors and engagement in physical activity behaviours. Findings Five factors emerged: targeting active travel, information about physical activity outside the workplace, facilities and onsite opportunities, sedentary behaviour, and information about physical activity within the workplace. Further, five clusters were identified illustrate how the factors are typically being utilised by workplaces across England. Commonly used practices related to promoting active travel, reducing sedentary behaviour and the provision of information but these practices were not associated with meeting MVPA guidelines. The provision of facilities and onsite exercise classes was associated with the most positive physical activity behaviour outcomes; however, these structures were rarely evident in workplaces. Originality/value. Previous research has identified a number of efficacious actions for promoting physical activity in the workplace, however, research investigating which of these are likely to be acceptable to worksites is limited. The present study is the first to combine these two important aspects. Five common profiles of promoting physical activity in worksites across England were identified and related to physical activity outcomes. Guidance is given to workplace managers to enable them to maximise the resources they have for the greatest gains in employee health. Where feasible, facilities and classes should be provided to achieve the most positive outcomes

The Shapovalov determinant for the Poisson superalgebras

Among simple Z-graded Lie superalgebras of polynomial growth, there are several which have no Cartan matrix but, nevertheless, have a quadratic even Casimir element C_{2}: these are the Lie superalgebra k^L(1|6) of vector fields on the (1|6)-dimensional supercircle preserving the contact form, and the series: the finite dimensional Lie superalgebra sh(0|2k) of special Hamiltonian fields in 2k odd indeterminates, and the Kac--Moody version of sh(0|2k). Using C_{2} we compute N. Shapovalov determinant for k^L(1|6) and sh(0|2k), and for the Poisson superalgebras po(0|2k) associated with sh(0|2k). A. Shapovalov described irreducible finite dimensional representations of po(0|n) and sh(0|n); we generalize his result for Verma modules: give criteria for irreducibility of the Verma modules over po(0|2k) and sh(0|2k)
